usb 3g modem detection issues

Hello Purists.

Would anybody be able to give me a hand? Just installed puredyne over my ubuntu karmic,it installed great, no problems. partitioned loveley alongside vista. I new it would tho ...
the problem is that i cant update it because i connect to the net via a 3g usb modem., and the sysem doesnt seem to detect the device through the network applet. the modem is working, it flashes blue . "lsusb" shows the device.(it is a huwaei). I have added the settings(connection) in the network applet, but as it wont detect the device as being there, it wont connect to it.
This problem also happened to me with the karmic ubuntu install, but i then had a choice of updating via ethernet and the problem was solved after that.
One idea came to me that maybe because the usbmodem also has hard-disk space, and that this could be blocking the kernel from loading the right modules?????????I had this happen to me before with puppylinux and a usb headphone+mic set. (if I had an externel usb-disk plugged in with the headphone set, the headphone wouldnt work)...i solved that using a little propgram in puppylinux to blacklist modules. Im not sure how to do that with puredyne.
Maybe there is a couple of .deb files that i could download using vista to update the networking system???
Could anyone please come to my rescue?????

hello,
nmapplet uses modemmanager to work with 3g mobile devices but its not a
dependency so you must install it manually - in the next puredyne release it
will be there as standard but for now:

sudo aptitude install modemmanager

and restart the network applet then all should work fine

Thanks for helping Mr Canning.
Well I downloaded modemmanager from here http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/modemmanager ,,,,,
and installed with dpkg -i blahblah. Its didnt seem to need any dependencies that was not installed.
Now the nmapplet detects the modem, and i can setup a connection with the app. but.(there is always a but!) when I click on the newly created connection in the drop-down menu to connect, the applet spins its little signal for a brief second then stops. It doesnt think its connected. The blue light on the modem how-ever, is lit up like a christmas tree.
If you think it might help, i could clear the dmesg buffer and give you what happens only after i plug in the usb-stick????

I just realised that I have 9.10 C+C installed, and that 9.11 is there. Does modemmanager come with the latest version?Does it matter if I use the cd or dvd installation iso?

no difference.
like i said i fyou do aptitude install modemmanager thats all you need - unless
prblems continue - that was all i had to do to get a virgin mobile 3g usb modem
working - was alittle bit weird - had to restart a couple of times and
connection was erratic - but it did work - once you can see your device in the
nmaplet then i think its ok - you can post some dmesg output here if you think
it cantains any hints to what your problem is.
also in mail threads can you not delete previous replies - it makes it very hard
to follow whats going on if you do this

any reason why you used dpkg -i instead of using a package manager such as
aptitutude or synaptic?

Re: [puredyne] usb 3g modem detection issues

hiya Rob.Im not anywhere near a ethernet connection im afraid, live out in the shtix, middle of nowhere( which happens to give me lots of time playing with renoise!!!). So I cant update normally with apt. have to keep coming back to vista to use the net.:-(
yeah these 3g things are terrible yokes. but i dont have much choice out here(Co.Galway Ireland). No broadband in my area, and getting wireless out here is a joke too.(I rang them 3-4 times to get them to install it and they they never showed, if they dont want my money, f**K them).
Could you check and see what version of modemmanager you have installed?  I used this one >>>>  modemmanager (0.2.git.20091014t233208.16f3e00-0ubuntu1)
Im pretty sure all the APN settings and stuff are correct, as the modem is connecting, just that nmapp is reporting its not.

the proposed method (installing modemmanager) worked perfectly for me, thank you very much! (seriously, you just made my life a lot simpler)

seems like an oversight that it is not pre installed ?? perhaps it makes sense from a perspective of keeping the system lean, but from a usability perspective it is confusing that you are apparently able to add and edit wireless modem connections, but they dont actually work...
